NaNoWriMo is only a month away

In a month today, hopeful novelists around the globe will take the plunge and try to write a novel in a month. I will be among them. For the tenth time, I'm going to attempt writing a novel in 30 days and, fingers crossed, win for the ninth time.

I love NaNoWriMo. When I discovered it on 8 November 2002 I didn't know yet that this challenge for writers with ambitious plans would change my life. What I knew then was that I loved the idea and even though it was already week two, I would join and try to write 50k words in three weeks and a day. It took me three weeks; when I uploaded my novel on 29 November and the counting bots declared me a winner, I got much more than just a winner's icon. It gave me confidence. It showed me that if I just sat down and did it, I could write a longer story. It made me think that being a writer might be a viable career path.

Nine years on, I'm a member of the editorial team for a travel website. I've written for quite a few other websites and blogs on a freelance basis. I don't know if I'd be able to say that had I not stumbled across NaNoWriMo.

Travel writing is fun, but fiction is still my main ambition. That's why I'll be starting to write a new novel in a month's time.
